If runway is under twelve months, investors will notice it in the financials folder of your data room and may use it in negotiation. Starting the raise with nine months or more left keeps you out of a forced timeline.

Before you start, put your monthly P&L, cash balance and the model behind this calculation into the data room, so the numbers investors see match the deck. Our due diligence checklist lists what else they will ask for, and the cost calculator shows what a room costs for the months you need it.

Runway FAQ

What is runway?

The number of months a company can operate before it runs out of cash, at its current spending and revenue. Net burn is monthly costs minus monthly revenue.

When should a startup start raising?

Most founders start six to nine months before cash runs out. A round takes three to six months from first meetings to money in the bank, and diligence can add weeks.

How much runway should a round buy?

Commonly 18 to 24 months, enough to reach the milestones the next round will be priced on, with a margin for delays.
